Twelve zodiac animals around two overlapping calendar wheels

Two Zodiac Rhythms
Your public role and private reset

Most people know the animal of their birth year. Traditional stem-branch calendars also assign a branch to every day. Put the two together and explore how you meet the world and how you return to yourself.

Why do you have two animals?

The Japanese word eto properly refers to the combination of ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches. Years, months, days, and two-hour periods can all receive stem-branch pairs. Four Pillars uses all four; this original Hoshiyomi Chaya diagnosis takes only the year and day branches as a clear starting point.

Year branchA prompt for social background, visible responsibility, and the role you may naturally take outside.
Day branchPart of the 60-day cycle, used here as a prompt for instinctive pace and how you settle when no role is required.

Method and boundary dates

The year branch follows the Four Pillars solar-month convention and changes around the beginning of spring, Lichun. The day branch changes at civil midnight in Japan Standard Time. A January or early-February result may therefore differ from zodiac calculators that change the year on January 1 or Lunar New Year.

This is an original two-branch reflection, not a full Four Pillars reading and not a prediction about personality, relationships, or the future.

Frequently asked questions

Why can my year animal differ from the one I know?

Systems use different year boundaries. This page uses Lichun to match the site's Four Pillars calculation; common Japanese counting, Lunar New Year, and January 1 can differ near the boundary.

Is this the same as the site's Animal Type reading?

No. Animal Type translates a 60-classification system into character animals. This page uses the twelve earthly-branch animals themselves and compares year with day.

Is my birthday stored?

Only in your browser, so other birthday readings on this site can reuse it. The calculator does not send it to a server.
